I had to salvage this one from RSM Facebook. By Mike:
This video was recently posted on reddit:
Everyone, even the presenter of the video, openly admitted they had no idea how this magic trick worked... but some mathphyzwizzes reared their ugly heads to spout nonsense about forces and how it works "because of maths".
He says: "The reason this is happening is that magnetic forces aren't linear with regard to distance. Like gravity, the force between the magnets diminish the further away the magnets are from each other. That is to say that the acting forces becomes more than proportionally stronger the closer the magnets come."
He tries to make illustrations to "explain" too (LOL: i.imgur.com/ZIAbStF.png). Don't stare at them too long... you all know about staring into voids.
But here is the thread explanation of the event- it gives you a PHYSICAL image for you to comprehend the mechanisms at work.
The left and center magnets are trapped next to each other by the black ring you see in the video. Both the right and left magnets' EM shells are oriented to spin in the same direction, so when they collide the ropes tanglearound each other and pull the magnets together. The center magnet is rotating in the opposite direction, but the size is smaller and therefore the extension of the ropes being flung out due to atomic spin is also smaller. This allows the left and right magnets to be pulled together for some distance, and then stopped by the center magnet once it gets close enough for them to become effective.
It's easy to explain and visualize with Bill Gaede's amazing Rope Hypothesis.
